4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

I use a Bamboo Wacom....Adobe Flash....Photoshop.... Mac and Pc Platforms.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

Well actually im working making videogames art for social networks... 8 Hours per day...then i go to my apartament to work in my personal projects...maybe 5 or 6 Hours more (14 Hours per day).....

6.... are you working your dream job?

Oh Hell Yeah!!!!!
7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Yeap....I think that is the best way of living... :)

1.... who is your favorite artist?

It is really hard to pick just one. I'll go with George Herriman (link), creator of Krazy Kat. It is the one comic I can pick up at any time and read and enjoy. It sounds pretentious, but each sunday strip is like poetry and the fact that he'd produce these every week (along with a daily strips) blows my mind completely.

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

Nope! I do put up tutorials every now and then, which reminds me I need to do one about the scanning and photoshop part of my process.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

Podcasts! Sometimes I'll listen to an album, but they generally aren't long enough. Podcasts I really dig include: Doug Loves Movies, Nerdist, Indoor Kids, Comedy Bang Bang, Smartest Man In The World, Judge John Hodgman and The Todd Glass Show which can be reeeaaally long and useful for long drawing sessions.

If I'm working in the same room as my buddy Jordan Pryke ( http://jordanpryke.tumblr.com/ ) we tend to listen to music. The albums we have on current rotation are: Bon Iver - (Self-titled), Mastodon (any album), Melvins - Bullhead, Big Business - Here Come The Water Works, Arcade Fire (any album), Sleep - Holy Mountain and, of course, ABC - The Lexicon of Love.
4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

The Hunt 102 nib and india ink on bristol board, usually. I also work a lot in my sketchbooks with a mechanical pencil. Colour on photoshop.
5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

I've been a bit erratic recently. I can work fairly ridiculous hours some days and then do just three or four on an off day. There isn't really a day where I don't draw though.
6.... are you working your dream job?

If I'm drawing I'm happy, especially if I'm drawing whatever I want. Should you be able to work your dream job? It wouldn't be a dream then, but I would like to work for Pixar or create a cartoon show.
7.... do you feel it's important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Sure, why not.

1.... who is your favorite artist?

That's tricky, as I have plenty of favorites, and in all different fields. I'm inspired by all kinds of creativity. Illustration had a big influence on me as a kid, and my favorite illustrator is Drew Struzan (link). I learned so much about the value of good art from Struzan. It was never the technical proficiency of a Struzan piece that stood out to me as the most impressive thing, (Although his skills are unparalleled) it was the heart and spirit that was alive in his work. It really helped guide me into wanting to be an artist. Likewise, the work of the band TOOL (link) really affected me in a positive way. I never realized just how powerfully inspiring art could be until I started appreciating their work.

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

No, I never have done that. I was never someone who liked school, so I don't really have a point of reference for being a teacher. :) I have nothing but respect and admiration for those who can teach. I doubt if I'd ever be good at that; I think I'm most valuable to my fellow artists simply through answering any questions they might have about what I do.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

I definitely have to occupy my brain while working, and I prefer podcasts 90% of the time. I seldom listen to music while working, though sometimes that's great too. I usually need something that acts as white noise so that I keep myself planted at my desk working, but not distracted.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

As a sculptor, I work in wax predominately. Wax is a great medium for the precise work I'm tasked to create. I can really control how far I take it when refining, because it's a very hard medium which is great for sanding and polishing. When it comes to tools. just about any metal tool you can find that looks helpful can be used to sculpt. Dental tools, various loop tools...anything I find that I think might aid me can be useful. For wax sculpture, it's also important to have an alcohol torch to warm your tools, and a waxpen, which is an electronic console that has various heated tips for wax sculpture. For refining, I use sanding sponges and lighter fluid (which acts as a solvent for wax, and can help smooth out little nooks you can't get to with sanding).

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

Ooh, that's tough. I work all the time; I'm hardly ever not working. :) Mostly due to necessity, but I even like working on my own stuff when I have down time. The sculpture work can be very time consuming to do well, and I'm usually trying to get it done as efficiently as possible for my clients. It's hard to put a number on the hours I work, but I'd say there are only about a few hours each day (besides sleeping hours) that I'm not working. :)

6.... are you working your dream job?

Oh yeah, I'd have to say this is what I had hoped to be doing when I was a kid. All I wanted to do was be creative for a living, and I've been fortunate enough to have that opportunity (Although, I never would have expected to become a sculptor of any kind. :)). I will say that, no matter how ideal a job seems, it will always be challenging and difficult. There have been quite a lot of sacrifices I've had to make in my personal life to continue working as an artist and that can be tough to get through sometimes. However, if you love doing something like creating art, and your drive to create is innate, there really isn't anything you can do to stop being creative, even when it drives you crazy. It will find a way to get out of you somehow, so it's best to embrace it. :) So long as you do it for the right reasons, you will grow and opportunities will reveal themselves.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

You know, I've thought a lot about that recently and I don't know how important it is, really. Like I mentioned, i think if it's something in you that you have to do, you really don't have much of a choice. :) I really think I myself would be empty without creative work. I need it to feel complete. If your dream job is that important to you, then by all means, it's worth pursuing. But I know so many people that work common jobs and find their happiness elsewhere. It's almost healthier I think. :) The bottom line I think is to do everything for the right reason. Knowing yourself and what drives you will point you in the direction of what's important.

8.... where can people see your work (online, conventions or exhibits)?

You can see my sculpture work on my Deviant Art gallery (http://trev-solo.deviantart.com) and most of my work has been sculpted for Sideshow Collectibles, so the final products can be purchased through their website (http://www.sideshowcollectibles.com). I've never really done more than visit conventions, which can be fun, but I've never exhibited before. I've always enjoyed making the work, and then releasing it into the world to sort of fend for itself. :) I get very self conscious and uncomfortable when I have to be the face for my work.

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

Yeah, I was really young, and I had just started appreciating Drew Struzan's artwork. I just knew in my bones I wanted to be an artist, and pretty much stuck with trying to pursue it all throughout my formative years. Thanks to my parents and my brother I was really supported the whole way through. That's something that none of us can control really, and I feel so fortunate to have been supported by my loved ones. I was never told what I was doing had no worth, even though my parents certainly couldn't have thought of art as a viable career. They supported me because I loved it, and that ultimately is the only reason I was able to grow enough to get to a point where I could work professionally.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

I've probably preached enough as it is. :) I hope it comes across the right way, though. I think the most valuable piece of advice I can lend is to remain tenacious. Art is hard, and it will always be difficult, but it's truly rewarding as well. We're all given the privilege to be a part of it, and to birth it into the world; That's something to revere, although it comes with lengthy gestation and a few labor pains. :) I feel so grateful to get to do this kind of work, and I think every artist should feel that way. I also hope all of my fellow artists will remain constantly critical of themselves. I've known artists who are very nearly ego maniacs, and it's off putting and laughable. I think it's my least favorite quality in artists and people in general. It's good to recognize your shortcomings, appreciate how much room there is to grow, and patiently pursue the horizon. If you find people embrace you along your path, thank them for understanding, but don't allow it to go to your head.

Push hard and put love into your work, not because it's necessary, but because you have the opportunity to do so. All the best to you all!

1.... who is your favorite artist?

Its really hard to pick just one. I love Jamie Hewlett (link), Al Hirschfeld (link), and T.S. Sullivant (link). Also I have a lot of great artist friends who possibly inspire me more.

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

I don't really consider myself much of a teacher. Maybe when I'm a bit older and
have more experience under my belt.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

Cats meowing and babies crying. But lately its been a lot of
surf, rockabilly, garage, cajun, spaghetti western soundtracks, a bit of country and Tom Waits.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

Anything from pen and ink, to markers, to Photoshop and Flash.
Its good to dabble in both traditional and digital mediums to keep yourself
as fresh as a babbling brook.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

A lot of people ask me this and I never have a clear answer because I always
loose track of time when I do art. Plus I have a job now which takes up
most of my time every week. I'm just going to say its still a mystery!

6.... are you working your dream job?

Well the job I have right now at Titmouse Inc. is my first job in the field and is pretty awesome
but its not really my dream job. I gotta work my way up.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Of course. If you didn't have a dream you'd just be a sad sack of potatoes growing
moldy.

I'm not really sure. I always loved cartoons and was always drawing. I guess its
when I realized that trying to become a power ranger, paleontologist, or paranormal
investigator wouldn't have worked out so good for me.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

To artists, learn basic drawing skills before you learn a "style". And learn things like
figure drawing, composition, and color theory. It really helps in the long run.
Also keep your socks clean.

1.... who is your favorite artist?

My favorite artist by far is Frank Frazetta (link). I have never looked at another fantasy artist’s work and got the rush I get from a Frazetta painting. The first time I saw an actual Frazetta painting in person hanging on the wall at his museum in East Stroudsburg, P.A., I got a tear in my eye.

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

The only artist workshops that I have participated in were for younger students as part of my day job at American Greetings Properties.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

Sometimes I actually have an old B-monster movie running on the computer or DVD player while I work….but the music I listen to when working are bad-ass, fully orchestrated movie soundtracks. Nothing better for getting you in the mood to work on some monster/fantasy artwork or sculpture.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

I’ve been an artist my whole life, working professionally for almost 30 years now. I paint with acrylics, ink with a variety of sharpies, felt tips and a staedler 3000 brush pen. I love to draw/sketch with a blue violet or black prisma color pencil. I also do full color artwork and renderings in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

I am a sculptor as well, working with Super Sculpey, Castilene and Monster Clay.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

At my day job I may average about 6-8 hours of work on artwork a day. I also have a thriving ‘after hours’ freelance business where I may spend about 2-4 hours a night after my day job.

6.... are you working your dream job?

I recently had a job-review where I actually did a lot of soul searching about this. Like most artists, I never ever really feel satisfied with my career, always feeling like there is something else I want to do, or achieve. My day job at American Greetings Properties has me working as part of a small crew of illustrators responsible for the design of anywhere from 3 to 5 entertainment properties at any given time. Some may be preschool, some are boys action adventure properties. We are partners with Weta Workshop in New Zealand on 2 of these properties, and I have traveled and worked with animation studios in L.A., New Zealand and India. I still get to work on my own artwork at home, doing sculpts for small collector toy companies as well as selling my own work at conventions and through my blog store. All these things have given me the ability to support my extended family and buy all the art books and monster movie DVD’s that I want. When I think of things that way, I must be pretty close to living the dream.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

I definitely feel any artist should be all that they can be. Always strive to do the work that you dream of doing. Make the moves you have to make to get there, try not to spend every ounce of your time doing work unrelated to your desired feild. You should always find the time to do artwork that will help you get the jobs that you really desire.

8.... where can people see your work (online, conventions or exhibits)?

I have a blog www.jgroman.blogspot.com and blog store that can be found at: www.thegromanstore.blogspot.com . I’ll do conventions here and there, most recently San Diego Comicon with Monsterverse comics, and Monsterpalooza in Burbank California.

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

Can’t ever remember having that ‘eureka’ moment where I knew I wanted to be an artist. I just can’t remember being good enough at anything else to pursue anything else. Sounds stupid perhaps, but it seems like art chose me, I didn’t choose it.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

Work, work, work! Don’t be one of those artists that talk about what they are going to do more than actually doing it. Study other artists, and try to strive to be on their level, not always in their shadow. What one man can do, another man can do. I may not be the best artist working today, but it will always be my goal to try.

Lately, I just turn on the tv. Talk radio is also good. I've actually kind of moved away from listening to music while I'm working.

For the pumpkins, I use knives and ribbons tools like the ones used for clay.

I'm an art teacher so, in a way, I work in the general arena of art all day. Actually creating art, maybe 3 hours a day.
6.... are you working your dream job?

I don't know if I would say that. But I can say that I don't sit around dreaming of doing anything else. I don't know if I ever had a "dream job" in mind.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

I'm one of these people who never really knew what he wanted to do for a career. I still just decide what I want to do for that week or even that day. So I guess I think one should realize how fortunate they are if they have a firm idea of what they want to do.

8.... where can people see your work (online, conventions or exhibits)?

I post my pumpkins in an online gallery at pumpkingutter.com. I also accept one or two events every season for a live-carving performance. When appropriate, I post those dates online.

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

I became an artist without deciding to. I wanted to learn how to make things from an early age and I guess I still feel the same way.

Nothing's coming to mind. =)

For trading cards and covers I used to use acrylics on cardstock paper, over xeroxed pencil art.
Lately, I draw a faster, simpler style line art with mechanical pencil, scanned and converted into Adobe Illustrator vector files, for adding flat colors.
A scanner, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign for book projects.
And some custom PostScript code I developed, for making randomly-generated cartoon posters and sketchbooks.
5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

4 to 6 hours per day

6.... are you working your dream job?

Yes
7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Yes.

1.... who is your favorite artist?

I can’t really pinpoint my exact favorite artist (I have a ton), but my favorites are people like Jack Davis (link) , Peter DeSeve (link), Mike Mignola (link), Scott Gustafson (link), Frank Frazetta (link), Brett Helquist (link), Tony DiTerlizzi (link), Eric Canete (link), Adam Rex (link), Brian Biggs (link). I could list several more!

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

I don’t, but on occasion I get to visit schools to share work, or describe my process in creating picture book illustrations. I love interacting with the kids. Kids are so inspiring because of their uninhibited creativity.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

I listen to mostly podcasts, internet radio, old time radio shows from the 1930’s to the 50’s. Sometimes with podcasts I get sidetracked because they will reference people, places, or things, then I have to go search for info on that. I have a somewhat short attention span at times.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

Now I’m mostly using India ink with a brush, and then coloring digitally via Photoshop. I also use watercolors but not as much as in the past. I love the computer for getting the color you really want, but happy accidents the traditional way is always pretty cool.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

I put in an 8 + hour day. In May I just started illustrating full-time. Before that I was an art director/graphic designer for several years, and illustrating at night. I was not getting much sleep and it was hard to manage with my family. :) I keep some pretty strange hours. Sometimes I get up at 4am and work. Sometimes I just work at night till 3am. It varies. Catching up on sleep is always a challenge. I try not to work on weekends, but sometimes I have to.

6.... are you working your dream job?

Yes! I am super excited bout doing what I love full time. I feel guilty about it actually. I’m hoping to always do this as a career, if I can that would be ideal for me.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Yes definitely. I think you just have to be prepared for it. It is not always easy, and you don’t always get what you wish for.

8.... where can people see your work (online, conventions or exhibits)?

My Blog ( http://robbvision.blogspot.com/) and Deviant page ( http://robbvision.deviantart.com/) are the best place to check out my newest work. My main website (Robbvision.com) is a bit out dated and needs refreshing. I actually just attended Wizard World Chicago to sell some prints and original artwork.

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

Since I was about 4 or 5 years old I think. There was no question in my mind that I wanted to be an artist someday. Either that or an astronaut, and when I found out that astronauts don’t really carry ray-guns and lightsabers, I just settled on being an artist.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

I’ve heard this from a lot of different artists, so it sounds a bit cliché, but always strive to stand out as an individual and do something unique from the many illustrators out there. Find what you do best and push on to improve and learn new things. Also getting your hands on different illustration annuals, and reviewing other illustrator’s sites.Seeing as many styles that are out there always helps. I like doing that for an inspirational kick in the pants and seeing how other people’s visula take on things.

1.... who is your favorite artist?

I have a lot of favorite artists, but I would say that Bill Peet (link), Chuck Jones (link), and a lot of the guys who made Disney Animation successful before I was born have had the most influence on my work. My favorite artist right now is Byron Howard (link). He co-directed "Tangled." I met him once before I knew who he was. Dumb me.

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

I know I wouldn't want to take a workshop from me, so, no... unfortunately I don't.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

It depends on the day and my mood, I guess. Here are some of my favorites, though... lots of variety: John Denver, Barenaked Ladies, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Eagles, Cat Stevens, Creedence, Clearwater Revival, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Sons of the Pioneers, Bread, R.E.M., Jim Croce, and Disney soundtracks.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

I either draw with pencil on paper and clean it up with a pen, or I draw on a Cintiq tablet in Photoshop. That's pretty much it.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

Probably between 20 and 40.

6.... are you working your dream job?

I can think of a lot of dream jobs I could have, but yeah - the job I have is one of them.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

1. Who is your favorite artist?

Well, besides everyone on your blog, Eric, (Man, you've got good taste!), I have lots of favorites from the past, and they change from week to week. This week I would say Adolph von Menzel (link), the self-taught German realist. But if Mr. Menzel saw me admiring his drawings, he would shake his head and say, “Don’t look at my art. Look at Nature. That’s where you’ll find your answers.”

2. Do you offer workshops for artists?

Don’t you remember? You’ve been enrolled in two of them! Each time it’s a different topic: designing a Pan figure, dinosaurs in street scenes, painting in colored light, inventing “tool people.” The next one is a lecture/demo on composition at LAAFA in October.

3. What do you like to listen to while you work?

I listen to almost every kind of music. But I keep coming back to Bach, Mozart, and Brahms. They have depths beyond depths. If only art could go where music goes.

4. What medium and tools do you use to create your art?

Oils and watercolors for painting. Sculpey for maquettes. Water-soluble colored pencils for sketching. Dip pens for lettering. I’m moving boldly forward into the nineteenth century. But I love my computer, too, for writing, graphic design, and video editing.

5. During an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

There’s no average. I tend to do five years’ worth of paintings in the space of two years, and then fool around with other things for the next three years until the next book blooms in my head.

6. Are you working your dream job?

Yes, but remember, dreams are made tangible by means of drudgery. For one hour of flight, there are 999 hours spent in the hangar, tinkering with the engine and the ailerons.

7. Do you feel it’s important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

I can’t worry about what choices others should make, especially regarding dreams, which are inherently dangerous. But a life without illusions may be more dangerous in the long run.

8. Where can people see your work (online, conventions or exhibits)?

The best place to start online is my blog (link). My other websites (link) are due for sprucing up. Exhibit-wise, there are currently two of my paintings in a museum in Maine. And in 2012 there will be two big Dinotopia retrospective exhibitions, one in the Midwest and one in New England.

9. Was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

When I was thirteen, I woke up to the idea that art could be a vocation as well as an avocation. That happened when people began to pay me for my calligraphy and my pen drawings. Since then the challenge has been, as Robert Frost once said, “to unite my avocation and my vocation as my two eyes make one in sight."

10. Is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

You, Mr. Millen, are the only person who ever asked me for my used brushes, which you replaced with new brushes. For the generosity of that trade, I salute you! And my one question for you is: what did you do with all those old brushes?

1.... who is your favorite artist?

I have SO many favorite artists.. but the first one that comes to mind is the character designer Nico Marlet (link). His work is so simple, so complex, and so full of character!

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

I have recently been doing some DVD tutorials, but they aren't released yet. Keep an eye on my blog in the future for details ;) Other than that, I'm more than happy to offer any help in person or through the internets/emails.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

Man, I listen to a lot of stuff..... I've developed a (good?bad?) habit where I have to be listening to something, or watching something while I work. I like to listen to movie soundtracks, and more ambient music like The Album Leaf, Radiohead, and Sigur Ros. I also like watching TV shows on Netflix.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

I use Photoshop for all my digital paintings, concept work and illustration. I love to draw in my sketchbook with colerase pencils, brush pens, and watercolors.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

Well at my full-time job, I spend 8 hours a day painting, usually. Even though I'm pretty beat when I get home, I like to draw or paint for another hour or two.

6.... are you working your dream job?

I AM! I currently work as a character artist on World of Warcraft at Blizzard Entertainment. I got extremely lucky landing this job right out of school. Out of all the possibilities, this job was my number 1 choice.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

I think it's important to always be striving for your dream job. However, it's more important to fall in love with the actual craft you are learning. Personally, I would be pretty happy wherever I was, as long as I could be drawing and painting things that I am interested in. First pursue to master your craft, and everything else will fall into place.

8.... where can people see your work (online, conventions or exhibits)?

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

When I was really little, 7 I think.. I would copy the art from the game manuals from my Super Nintendo games. Secret of Mana is my favorite game of all time, and after I first played it, I told everyone I wanted to be a concept artist. I love all entertainment artwork, but video games spoke to me louder than any other medium.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

Just want to say thanks to all the other artists out there for inspiring me so much! Looking and studying other people's work is by FAR the best way to learn. Thanks for this opportunity! :)

I'm hoping to one of these days. A lot of people have asked me about this.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

Really chilled out stuff like Air Supply. Just kidding. I can't hear lyrics when I work, they distract me too much and take me out of that critical art zone I need to stay in to create great art. I usually listen to ambient music on Pandora or movie soundtracks from my favorite science fiction and fantasy movies. This is a great trick I use. I choose an epic soundtrack on Pandora that is similar to the project I'm working. It totally inspires me.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

Almost all digital. I used to draw, then scan it in, but when I'm at home or work I use my Cintiq 21" and Corel Painter. Every now and then I still bust out the sketch book (if I'm on an airplane or at the beach), but I also have a decent drawing app on my iPhone and a stylus (www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/cellphone/a31f/) that I use too.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

I'm in a really busy time trying to get some projects off the ground so right now...12-13 hours a day. It's usually closer to 8.

6.... are you working your dream job?

Yup! I am working at the coolest studio. They are committed to creativity in a way that I've never experienced before. THAT is a dream. I'm creating concept and art direction for a number of new IPs. I love it.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Absolutely. When you're at your dream job, the love and passion show through in your work.

8.... where can people see your work (online, conventions or exhibits)?

www.hog-heaven.blogspot.com I have other (private) portfolios that can only be shown to potential employers because they have sensitive material on them. I'm putting together some books that will be available some day. Hopefully sooner than later.

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

I'm told I've said I was going to be an artist since I was a toddler. I toyed with other -more "practical"- professions, but was taking art classes as electives. They were the only classes I looked forward to. I had a moment of pure courage in college and decided I was going to go for it. I've never regretted it for one second. In fact, the only nightmare I have is the one where I chose to be something else.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

Don't let anyone talk you out of doing what you love. They don't have to live your life and live with the potential regret you'll have if you don't follow your dreams.

1.... who is your favorite artist?

There are many artists that I admire and new ones are always being added, but there are some whose work continually inspires (and frustrates!) me. They are, to name a few: Rembrandt (link), Chardin (link), N.C. Wyeth (link), Charles Dana Gibson (link), Norman Rockwell (link), Arthur Rackham (link), Edmund Dulac (link) and William Heath Robinson (link).

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

As of yet I haven’t held any workshops. I’m afraid that after about 45 minutes I’d run out of coherent information.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

I listen to a variety of things while working everyday from a classic music station to NPR. I also listen to CDs, which included classical, folk, pop, rock and some jazz. And once I’m actually involved in a painting, as opposed to sketching or drawing, I have listened to books on tape – most recently, The Cunning Man by Robertson Davies.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

Primarily, I used the old fashioned methods of drawing with graphite pencils and painting with oils. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with a product called liquid pencil, which is much like acrylic paint in consistency but which dries to look like graphite. It comes in a few values, but I like 3 and 9, and it has been very interesting to play around with. It’s primary benefit is that you can brush it on like paint, either filling a large area or applying it like an ink and brush line. When it dries it looks remarkably like pencil and can be used along with traditional pencils to get some interesting effects. I also use a xerox machine a lot for sizing and positioning drawings and sketches.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

I usually work a fairly standard 8 hours a day, unless, of course, there is a deadline crunch. This last January through April I worked seven days a week, without a day off, but I’d really rather not do that if I can avoid it.

6.... are you working your dream job?

I’ve had the opportunity to work on several dream jobs – some of which had nightmarish moments – but all in all I’ve been very fortunate. I really enjoy what I do.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

I may be overly optimistic, but I think there is a perfect job for everyone out there somewhere –whether circumstances align in the right way or whether opportunities come at the right time is another thing. As much as I believe in that theory, I also feel that people have to be realistic about their abilities and realize whether or not they possess the necessary talent and have acquired the right caliber of skills to attain the job of their dreams. Often happiness is achieved by appreciating and developing the talents you have been given as opposed to dreaming about the ones you don’t possess.

8.... where can people see your work (online, conventions or exhibits)?

Much of the work I’ve done over the last ten years can be found on our website: www.scottgustafson.com. 9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

Ever since I’ve been aware of what artists and cartoonists are, I’ve been interested in becoming one. Being fascinated by animated cartoons, I first wanted to become an animator, but later found that illustration was better suited to my particular set of skills and temperament.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

No matter what kind of artwork you aspire to, or how much money you think other artists make, try first and foremost to know yourself. If you can assess your strengths as well as your weaknesses, tap into your passions and be willing to work and work, and then work some more, you might be surprised at the personal goals that you can achieve.

1.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

To answer that question, I must first explain that there are two different kinds of art that I create. For my day-job I work as a storyboard artist in Television Animation. That’s how I make my living, that’s my bread-and-butter. But then, in my free time, I do a lot of comic book art and illustration - just to keep art fun, so it never gets to a point where art feels too much like work! Haha. That said - when I’m working on comics projects or illustrations, I draw the old fashioned way - with an ink brush and a bottle of India ink on 2-Ply Bristol Board paper. When I am doing my day job, working on animation storyboards, I get all futuristic, with state of the art technology. Haha. In other words, I do storyboards digitally, on a Cinitiq, with Photoshop.

2.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art (day job and free time)?

Well, let’s see. My day job in animation is a typical, 40-hour a week, full-time job. Meaning that I am sitting at my desk drawing cartoons for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Although sometimes, when we are getting down to the final stage of completing an episode, it can get a little crazy and I have to put in over-time. Working late, or working over the weekend. That doesn’t happen very often, but sometimes it does.
The workload in animation fluctuates a lot. You have your easy, slow phases, and then you have your insane, non-stop busy phases. Basically each episode is on a 6-week schedule. We have 6 weeks to complete the storyboard for a single episode. So it usually ends up being about 4 weeks of normal working hours, and the last 2 weeks are an insane rush to get it all finished on time. Then the cycle starts over.
In the animation business deadlines are very strict and missing them is considered unacceptable. So when you get into a crunch, you just have to put in long hours, be a trooper, and make it happen.
When I have free weekends I work on comic book projects, some of which are my own creations, some of which are freelance jobs I am illustrating for other publishers. Or I will use weekends to do illustration projects. It probably sounds crazy to work on the weekends if you don’t have to. But I really love doing comics and illustration. That isn’t work to me, it’s like play-time. That kind of artwork is relaxing. But I do that stuff at my leisure. Since it is secondary to my day-job, I don’t have set hours for it. I draw comics and illustration for fun, when and if I feel like it. So it’s impossible to say how many hours I put into it. But I treat it like a hobby. Just another form of escapist entertainment like reading books, watching movies, or playing video games. I am pretty fast at doing comics and illustrations. If that were my full time job I could easily complete one full comic page or one full illustration per day. But I’m not in that situation right now, so I do that work much more slowly.

3.... are you working your dream job?

Well maybe not exactly – but then, when I try to imagine my “dream job”… I have to be realistic and say, I don’t think my “dream job” even exists. Or perhaps it does exist but it is extremely rare and very unlikely. My ultimate “dream job” would be, a situation like Mike Mignola or Frank Miller has, where you can literally spend every single day writing and drawing your own books and stories, about your own characters, your own creations, your own ideas – and have a loyal fan following large enough that when those books are published, the sales allow you to make a comfortable living doing only that. I suppose that would be my dream job, if my whole career was writing and drawing my own comics projects about my own characters. But, you know, there’s maybe one in a million guys who have that situation. I know how rare that is, so it doesn’t depress me that I’m not one of those one-in-a-million guys. If you’re going to be depressed about that, you might as well be depressed that you aren’t a movie star, or that you didn’t win the lottery or something. Haha.
That said, the situation I am in, might not be my exact idea of a “dream job”, but it is pretty darn close, and I am very content.
My regular day job is to draw pictures of cool stuff every day. Right now I’m working on a very cool, very popular TV show – “Transformers: Prime”. One of my proudest moments working on this series was in an episode called “Operation Breakdown”. There’s a scene I storyboarded where one of the giant robots is strapped down in a tunnel and a mad scientist character takes a giant drill and starts drilling into this robot’s eye. My director specifically gave me that scene to design because of my interest in horror and he wanted it to be very scary. He was really generous in letting me design that scene however I wanted, so I threw in all these creepy ideas like having the mad scientist completely silhouetted with only his eye goggles glowing in the dark. It looked scary on paper, but you never know how this stuff will be changed after it goes through all the different stages of post-production. But I recently saw the finished episode, and the final CGI animation for this scene was extremely faithful to my storyboards. They literally animated it almost exactly how I drew it. It was such a rush to see that. But that’s an example of a wonderful creative experience that never would have happened if I were actually doing my “dream job”, sitting at home alone, making a living only by writing and drawing my comic books.
So to answer your question, am I living my “dream job”? Well, maybe not exactly – but thank God for that. If I were actually living my “dream job” I would be missing out on a lot of other cool stuff that has only happened because of my day job. It’s very ironic when you think about it. Anyway, I can’t complain.
4.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Absolutely! But the point I was trying to make earlier, is that you should pursue your dream job while being totally realistic about it.

5.... is there a secret to adding life and feeling to your art?

The only secret I know is to believe in whatever subject you are drawing as if it is a real thing. You have to get yourself into that mindset. This is not a drawing. This is a real character doing something real, in a real situation. I guess it’s sort of like what actors do to give a good performance. When you are drawing that monster, or that superhero, or that giant robot, or whatever, you have to pretend you are that character. Get inside his head and feel his situation as you draw him. If you can really immerse yourself in the character, the correct personality, action, pose, and facial expression will naturally come out.

6.... are there things that help increase your creativity?

Yes. Before I start drawing I like to spend a couple hours doing something that will inspire my imagination. Watching certain movies will do it. Another thing that really helps is looking at the artwork of other artists who are better than me, because that makes me feel challenged and shows me new tricks, and it motivates me to try harder. This is my method of working I suppose… I goof around and let a few hours waste away and to anybody else it probably looks like I am procrastinating and being very irresponsible. But actually all that goofing off is a way of recharging my creative batteries, revving up the old imagination-engine. And just when it looks like I’ve wasted half the day I will sit down and start drawing lightning fast, and crank out 8 hours worth of work in 4 hours. Spending half my day being anti-productive somehow enables me to be doubly-productive at the end of the day. When I am actually sitting at the drawing desk, working - I like to listen to music that is appropriate for whatever I am drawing. Mood-appropriate music seems to complete the fantasy and really takes my imagination to another place where I really believe in the scene I am drawing.

7.... what helps you maintain focus and motiviation while producing artwork?

If I’m working on my animation storyboard day-job, the motivation is a combination of things: Not wanting to let down my team by missing my deadline. A desire to impress my director by composing a good drawing or a good scene. And of course, the sacred weekly paycheck is also a big motivator! Haha.
When it comes to my personal comics projects or illustrations the only motivation is to have fun, making cool stuff. Draw some cool monsters. Entertain myself. And of course I’m always hoping that when I post a new illustration or self-publish a new book that other people will enjoy it, too.
To stay focused on the work, I listen to music or audiobooks while I draw. I need some kind of information coming in for my brain to chew on so it won’t bother me while I’m working. See I need to keep my brain distracted while I draw so I won’t over-think it. I find that drawing is like riding a bicycle. It’s all muscle-memory. The only time you lose your balance and fall off is when you start thinking about HOW you are keeping your balance.

8.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

That’s sort of an impossible question to answer because I don’t remember a time when I didn’t draw. My parents and grandparents have told me that I started drawing when I was two or three years old. But I have no memory of “starting to draw” or deciding one day that I “wanted to be an artist”. Drawing was just something that I always did. And then later on in life, as a kid in school, it was just a given. Like, what do you want to be when you grow up? Well, an artist of course. What else was I going to do? I wasn’t good at anything else!

9.... as an artist what would you like to be remembered for?

I don’t know. How bout this: I’d like to be remembered for making scary, weird art and entertainment that creeped out as many people as possible.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

I can’t give any advice except to tell you what has worked for me. Based on my experience, I would say: make a point of pursuing an art career on two different fronts. Find a day job where you can use your artistic talents, that also offers important, practical things like a weekly paycheck and health insurance and dental insurance, so you can live a normal, comfortable life, stay healthy, afford to buy a house, and take your spouse out to a nice dinner once in a while. And on the side, in your spare time, pursue the artistic goal that really is your “dream come true”, no matter how weird, crazy, impractical, or unprofitable it may seem. If you strive for both of these things, you stand a better chance of reaching a point where you can be responsible and creatively satisfied at the same time. There’s a great old quote from Gustave Flaubert, who once said, “Be regular and orderly in your life, so that you may be violent and original in your work.” That pretty much describes how I approach my whole creative career.

1.... who is your favorite artist?

The greatest compliment I ever received was to be called a “twisted Norman Rockwell”. He (Norman Rockwell link), as well as Arthur Rackham (link), James Bama (link), Jack Davis (link) and Ed “Big Daddy” Roth (link), thoroughly inspired me.

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

Not really, but I have given a few demos and lectures at cons and art schools.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

I usually have a DVD of some movie playing in the background or a variety of music...anything but rap.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

My initial sculpts are done in Sculpy. Then I make a mold, and the finished sculpt gets casted in silicone. I use sculpting tools, a hair poking tool, paints, fiberglass, foams, resins, whatever is necessary. It is mixed media in the most extreme sense of the word. I have photo-documented a few of my larger pieces and it took over 500 shots to document every aspect of their creation. I was shocked. I had to be sculptor, mold maker, painter, chemist, seamstress, welder, carpenter, wigmaker, etc. It’s a blast and seldom gets boring, but it’s a hell of a lot of work.
5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

It varies anywhere from all day long to just a few hours in a day. My mind is on creating almost all of the time. Sometimes, I’m on a roll at night and work till 3AM. I don’t keep a tally intentionally. If I did I might get depressed, and it really would become work.

6.... are you working your dream job?

Yes. Just like with any job, there are rough days when things don’t seem to come together, but ultimately there’s just no way to beat getting paid to do what you love.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

For me it was imperative. I think it depends on what a person wants. I know plenty of people who are content viewing their job as something they do to make money, and that money allows them to pursue their dreams and interests in their personal time. To each his/her own.

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

Creating art seemed to be one of the few things that came naturally to me as a child. It was more a matter of me not being able to do very much else well. I have always loved working with my hands. I think I spent more time in high school shop class and art class than anywhere else when I was growing up. I was a pretty good lifeguard but the pay for that sucks and I’m 50 now.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

Art as a career choice requires an incredible amount of resilience. You’re going to face criticism and rejection. I don’t believe I know any artists who aren’t sensitive and vulnerable to some degree. I could talk about all the '”follow your dreams” clichés here, but for me I think one of the most important ingredients to happiness as an artist is finding a partner who loves and supports you and what you do. Like many artists, I’m sometimes not that easy to live with. I have fears and anxieties, constant distractions, ideas that need a sounding board, etc. For me and most of the successful, happy artists I know, their spouse or partner, artist or not, was a very important element. When I have the chance to get together with other artists, I love to observe the interactions they have with their significant others. I find there is a direct correlation with the amount of laughter and harmony they have between themselves and their happiness and success as an artist. So the big question is, how do you find that? Well, that answer is different for everybody. The thing to remember is if and when you do, don’t take it for granted. It is the best gift you’ll ever receive.

I usually «listen» documentary films or TV shows... And for the music only, I enjoy movies soundtracks or all the pieces from Philip Glass and Gérard Manset.

I use acrylic (Liquitex) on papers (Canson 224gr). I always paint my illustration on a «traditionnal» way with brushes plus few adjustments with pencils (Derwent Watercolour), Copic markers, and inks.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

I think that I usually work about 8~10 hours a day. But if I'm really focused on my works I can't stop myself (or if I'm late and so close of the deadline), I can work more than 15 hours a day... ;{

6.... are you working your dream job?

Ohhhh yes! When I was a little boy, five years old, the teacher asked to the children what they wanted to do in the future. The little guys said policeman, fireman or doctor. I said that... I wanted to draw alone in a studio... The teacher phoned to my parents to ask if everything was ok with me. They answered yes of course ;)

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Yes, we must aim high! The famous painter Edgar Degas wrote my leitmotiv:
«One must have a high opinion of a work of art – not the work one is creating at the moment, but of that which one desires to achieve one day. Without this it is not worthwhile working.»

I don't believe in gift for drawing. It's possible to LEARN artistic skills. LEARNING, UNDERSTANDING, SHARING and IMPARTING knowledges is the most important. And to the way of success and accomplishment, only three words: working, working and working ;)

1.... who is your favorite artist?

If I had to choose only one I would say Norman Rockwell (link) he is my master for so long time and I learned so much looking at his paintings. I wish I could meet him !But there are so many Disney, Pre raphaelite painters, contemporary artists like James Gurney (link), Alan Lee (link), Olivier Ledroit (link), Iain McCaig (link), Glen Kean (link), Dan Haskett (link), etc. a neverending list in fact and I love reading artbooks of CG animation !

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

Not yet but I'd love to. I'm currently in a process of immigration to get Canadian residency (over very soon fortunately) so as soon as I will be clear I will find my own workshop and why not teaching then. I need just to feel more confident in my English talking. That's not easy each time haha.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

Well, all depends on what I'm drawing ! Celtic music for some, soundtracks of movies sometimes, metal for fantasy pictures. I need an atmosphere a mood to feel and hear my illustration becoming alive.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

I use both digital and traditionnal medium since 2009, since I worked for Sony Pictures Animation.When I have the time to paint, for special order, for my books,...I like the traditional way : watercolor with gouach to high the light - for the quick scene or portrait of little fairies and when I need to go further in a scene of a picture I like to use oil paintings on canvas paper, I can go deep in the details. Really fun.For the quick quick stuff, I use my 21ux cintiq board. Really confortable and convenient. I save so much time with it.But I often do first a quick sketch in charcoal that I scan next and re-work on the board.I love the charcoal. It's a way so instinctive and we can have so much in the grayscale.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

Oh dear... have I to count ?... I begin at 10am and I finish at 8pm sometimes more and when it needs or when I just want to, I work the week end. So to give you an average 10-12 hours a day I would say and 6 days a week. Lucky me, I have a very understanding and patient girlfriend !

6.... are you working your dream job?

Oh yes man ! I'm drawing since my 4 years old ! In France I was already working on my dream job, creating my own books, with my own texts. That is the dream of a lot of artists. Then I moved to be closer the USA where I could reach more opportunities of work for CG animations, movies in concept art. And I found ! I change a little my aims but I'm still living my dream job since my 20s.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Of course! I hope everyone can fulfill their dreams. No frustrations just a feeling of well being and own satisfaction. Very pretentious in fact haha.But it's not always a blue dream. I feel angry when I don't manage to finish a picture, or when I go too far in the picture that I throw it to the garbage, when a client ask me to change details though I love it like that, so I grumble, I shout. It's not a long quiet river you know !!

I never thought about it, it came by itself. I wasn't a good student at school I was just good in drawing.I met a very good friend at the good moment, with whom I shared my enthousiasm, my passion of work, my workshop, my dreams, everything. He is like my brother and it's as if we grew up together.And we met a publisher very early and that's it : it was the beginning of my adventure.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

The fun in our job is that it's not always a solitary job. Of course you are alone to draw, to paint but what I'm saying is that I used to live retire in my house, alone, seeing nobody but I learned so much with the eyes of other people, the feedbacks of other artists. And in fact i'm still learning when I find a talented artist I want to know how he does to achieve his picture. We need people'eyes to move ahead go further.

I've presented at universities and stuff but nothing regularly. I've got a few tutorials on my blog, that's about it

Movie soundtracks, video game podcasts, Pink Floyd. I find it really helpful to listen to something that matches the tone of what I'm creating but I don't do it enough.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

Sketching: Mechanical pencil, Zebra ball-point pen, white gel pen (one mid tone paper).Painting: Painter and Photoshop (digital), Oils or watercolors (traditional).

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

Not counting my job about 10-12 hours a week (counting my job, a lot more).

6.... are you working your dream job?

Yes.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Absolutely. But do it for real. I have friends who say they want to be an artist and are even quite naturally talented but then produce barely a few pieces of art a year.

Not really, from an early age I loved to draw and wanted to be an artist, I never seriously considered any alternatives.

I suck at art. We all suck at art (albeit, to varying degrees). And even if we don't, the second we start to think we don't, we will. Don't get comfortable, don't stop trying new things, never stop learning. However, it's important to build on what you know and, of course, draw A LOT.

Yes, I firmly believe in the message of those that want it most will get it. I have seen a lot of talented people bow out before they amounted to their full potential. I have seen a lot of underdogs rise above the fray through sheer willpower and hard work.

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

There was an exact moment in time when I knew I wanted to be an artist. When I was in Kindergarten, I won an art contest about reading and books. At that moment I labeled myself subconsciously as a good artist.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

Work smart and hard. I see a lot of artist that don't truly observe life. They look at it through the lens of another artists craft. Draw what you see for yourself. Look to other artists for solutions to visual problems, but don't look at their art as the solutions themselves. Go to local theatre, sporting events, and parks. Inspiration is everywhere. If you are not inspired to make something you are getting out, reading or interacting with people enough.

This next part is going to come out really bad but it has to be said. I know a lot of artists that say they work hard but never really draw or produce art. Steve Brodner told me once that everyone has about 10,000 bad drawings in them. When you draw, you exercise one of those bad drawings out of your system. So keep drawing. If you aren't going to work hard, don't fool yourself. Move onto something that you can make a living on. I have seen a lot of people that string loved ones to their dead dreams for too long. This can be a huge financial burden and can end families. If you have been turned down by a program or job three or more times, maybe you would do better off somewhere else. The nice thing about art is all you need is a paper and pencil to get your game on.

1.... who is your favorite artist?

I am continually looking at artists work. I love the work of Casper David Freidrichs ( link), Gustave Moreau ( link), Karoly Ferenczy ( link ), Eaun Uglow ( link ), Gustave Dore ( link ), Andrew Wyeth ( link).

There's got to be many more too numerous to mention and the list grows by the day.

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

I don't offer workshops as I feel I'm still learning and I don't have the time

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

I love reading for my own pleasure when I have the time, and listening to a wide selection of music much of this during the long hours whilst painting.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

I paint mainly in acrylics and mostly brushwork, but whenever I need to do large areas of colour I use an airbrush. I used gouache paint some years ago, it’s very easy to use and it’s brilliant for detail but it is powdery and therefore the colour is very easily scratched. So I switched to acrylics which I tend to use like gouache paint, not like oil paints, I do love all that thick impasto effect but I’ve never been able to work that way, so mostly my style is just the traditional paintbrush techniques - three brushes, big, medium and small. Occasionally I am asked to do some black and white illustrations, then I use Indian Ink, fineline pen, even felt-tip pens, not good if you have to use a white medium on top though! I’ve resisted the digital stuff because truthfully I’ve never had the time to learn.

When on final artwork sometimes a cunning hybridisation of imagery fails, so I have to dredge deep on my own skills, and guess what? it gets harder.Marianne, my wife and technical wizard, will scan research images for me, size them up and print them out. Then it’s the smoke and mirrors bit! The rest is just hard work and pushing against deadlines.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

When the visual is approved the finished artwork goes ahead. This part of the artwork can take on average 10 days of full time painting.

6....how do you maintain motivation and concentration over a long periods of time?

As far as being motivated is concerned...well I think that is partly down to survival as This is the only skill I have .

It has never been too much of an effort either because whatever the commission [sometimes difficult ] It's a problem solving exercise, and also the impetus can be driven by tight deadlines say from publishers.

If you can see the intensity in the paintings....yes this is real blood sweat and tears!

7....how would you describe your work?

I seemed to have fallen into 3 very different genres of art - the Science Fiction and Fantasy book cover art, the "Games Workshop" graphic images (they are the largest role-playing fantasy gaming company in the world) and the wildlife painting I do which is more fine art.

I'm going to have an exhibition in November 2011 at Lancaster Library, Lancashire England. Just had this confirmed.

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

I'm sure I was always interested in pictures. When I was very young I must have been aware of narrative illustration. In one fairy tale book I can remember a particular illustration, which was so disturbing I always had to try and avoid that particular part of the book. It had the quality of a recurring nightmare. When I was tiny apparently I used to spend hours scribbling on everything that was at hand. My mum said if I couldn't ask for something as a toddler I would draw it for her! I’m still scribbling now, so that early programming is still the driver.

School was a long hopeless experience; the only thing I enjoyed was art. I was good at cross-country running, but just not the age for commitment. College... for some reason I decided on a Graphic Design course, the natural progression from there into advertising, however, I seemed to have more affinities with what they were doing in fine arts department

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

Confidence in knowing that whatever frustrations may occur, vis-à-vis the commission, the deadline is seriously important and must be met. Freelance work by it's very nature is a very solitary occupation - there are many
distractions/temptations when working from home.

Also, it may sound boring but it's essential to keep all receipts, copy invoices, and all that business stuff, organized for accountancy purposes.
Be inspired by other artists' approach to commissions, but it's essential to bring your own individual vision. Get a trustworthy agent!

1.... who is your favorite artist?

OH please! Nobody has ONE favorite artist! I'll narrow it down to the three that I have STUDIED, as intentional influences.

1. Maureen Love (www.psychotica.net/evb/amarna/love.html) She is a animal sculptor best known for Breyer horses. Her animals were not just pretty statues of animals, her things breathe life. That's the quality that sets her work apart. I try to emulate her method of working; observation of live models, and using my own life drawings as much as possible.

Since I am a life-long amateur cartoonist, the other two are 2d artists that I consider my biggest influences for comic (aka graphic novel) work.

2. Walt Kelly (www.pogopossum.com/walt.htm) , creator of "Pogo. Sheer genius penmanship

3. Robert Lawson (www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Lawson_%28author%29) , an illustrator best known for "The story of Ferdinand".

I should clarify here that I don't COPY other artist's work, I study the qualities about their work that kicks me in the gut and try to figure out how to arrive at the same place with my own stuff.

Then there is just about every other artist on the planet, from comic artists to bird/wildlife painters to conceptual artists...They are all my favorites! I study them all.

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

No. I usually don't even know what I'm doing, I am a life long student myself!!

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

Public radio news stuff. I really need to broaden my horizons. Maybe I'll listen to right wing talk shows today.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

I have two jobs.

Most of the day I am airbrushing finished sculpture to be sold to pay the rent. This is done with Iwata airbrushes and "Golden" brand acrylic paint -in a large noisy spray booth.

When I sculpt, I use almost every type of clay: Plastaline, kleen clay, scupey, castaline, WED, wood clay, epoxy putty, wax, kritter clay... you name it . It all sucks, but THEN, the clay model is reproduced in plaster. THAT is the material I really sculpt in, I carve it using everything from band saws to tiny dental tools and ultrasonic cutters ... and LOTS of sandpaper.

...now the siren of digital sculpting is calling me...

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

I work all the time, 7days a week. I work on 2d stuff in the morning, I get to the Windstone studio at around 10:am, work till 8 or 8:30 pm, eat, go to bed. That's it! -except when I get to weed wack and do laundry.

And once in awhile I get to do something fun, like this questionnaire.

6.... are you working your dream job?

This job isn't always a happy dream, because I am not asleep, and the hard reality of economics is involved.

It is very hard work. It can be insanely stressful and sometimes pretty awful, but... yes I am.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Oh, of course! Dreaming is a good pastime while you really earn money.

I wanted to be an artist after I found out that being a helicopter pilot was scary. I was 3. I had no idea how scary being an artist would be.

Audio books can help pass the time a lot, also movie scores or Tom Waits.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

Primarily castilene- a wax with clay-ish properties. I use metal tools that I heat with an alcohol lamp, and an electric heat pen. For larger stuff I use chavant clay.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

I try to get in 10-12 hours a day, used to be more before I had a wee chap to take care of.

6.... are you working your dream job?

Pretty much. I started as a fine artist as an apprentice in a bronze monument maker's studio, then got into toys at McFarlane. I loved going to work designing and sculpting for a living. Then I went freelance and began working from home, setting my own hours, and getting more diverse projects. Recently I branched out with some of my own designs with Dellamorte & Co. Combining creativity and craftsmanship is the most enjoyable way to spend my time I can think of.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

I think it's always worth striving for- and far better to make the attempt than to leave it as an unfulfilled dream. It is also good to keep a realistic perspective of your skills and prospects- you need that in order to grow and to construct a good plan of action. Also keeping in mind, luck plays a pretty big factor!

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

I thought of drawing as a fun hobby, but that's it until I was in high school. I had a teacher who was remarkably encouraging and helped me to take art seriously. I visited Italy my junior year and seeing the Renaissance art in person cemented it, I think.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

I have been sculpting for a long time, and I try to keep hold of the notion that I still have a lot to learn. There is always room to improve and refine your techniques, for your creativity to mature.
